The lively and vibrant town of Almuñécar on the Costa Tropical in Andalusia, Southern Spain has a classical Spanish atmosphere and has so far avoided being dominated by tourism.

Almunecar has roughly 26.000 inhabitants, including a large English, Scandinavian, Danish, French and German expatriate community.

Almunecar´s water park "Aqua Tropic" at Playa de Velilla Beach is especially popular, attracting old and young alike during the summer with its open air slides, pools, sunbathing areas and children activities.

The town boasts long stretches of sandy beach with several small coves and picturesque hidden bathing bays where you can enjoy almost any kind of water sports.

Along the beaches there are numerous beach bars, called "chiringuitos" and there are also plenty of excellent restaurants of all types in Almuñécar including Chinese, Indian, British, French, Scandinavian, German … but of course mainly with Spanish specialities and delicious Andalucian cuisine.

The Moorish and Phoenician architectural heritage shows up in the winding passages and cobbled squares of the old quarter as well as the prominent castle.

The town also has several markets, numerous good restaurants, the famous "Loro Sexi Bird Park" with over 120 different species of bird. Also very popular is the botanical garden "Parque del Majuelo", containing Europe's largest collection of subtropical plants, and the handsome Moorish castle, the "Castillo San Miguel".

A variety of holidays can be enjoyed at Almuñécar, including visiting nearby beaches, water sports, horse riding, scuba diving, golf and walking in the countryside, along with a thriving nightlife which you would be hard pressed to beat anywhere else on the Costa Tropical.

There are numerous late night bars and clubs throughout the town where you can dance until the early hours of the morning. For a great night out "Venta Luciano" has a barbecue and flamenco show every Friday night.

Not to forget: Modern supermarkets with a a wide range of Spanish and international specialities, banks and other facilities are also available.

The magnificent city of Granada with its famous Alhambra palace is only a 40 minutes drive from Almuñécar, with high quality skiing in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains from December to April.

Seville, another great destination, can be reached in 3 hours. Skiing in the morning and the beach in the afternoon can be a funny option during the winter. There are unlimited walking opportunities in the Alpujarra mountains within 1-2 hours drive.

This may be the best climate in Europe. Compared to the rest of the Spanish south coast, the Costa Tropical is particularly mild in the winter and relatively cool and comfortable during the summer. There are more than 320 sunny days each year!

Almunecar and La Herradura form the tourist capital of the Costa Tropical. This relatively unknown stretch of Spain's southern coastline belongs to Granada province in Andalusia. It lies between the more populous Costa del Sol to the west, and the coast of Almería to the east.

It's here that the continent of Africa is trying, and noticeably succeeding, to push its way under the mass of Europe. The dramatic results are what give the Costa Tropical its special geography and climate, so unlike any other coastline in southern Spain.

And above everything towers the grand Sierra Nevada. Here, more than a dozen peaks over 3,000 m break the skyline, including the two highest on the Spanish mainland - Mulhacén (3.482 m) and Pico de Veleta (3.398 m), form a natural weather-break which protects the Granadan coastline from the worst influences of the European winters, while Africa, to the south, helps buffer the harsh effects of both the Mediterranean and Atlantic weather.

As a result, the area has an extraordinarily benign subtropical climate which can be seen in the variety of exotic products to be found in the local markets and restaurants, especially the different fruits.
